oops, read the intro paragraph & realise the above suggestions probably do not apply..sooo, what about

Shan/shant - embarrassing beyond belief

Joey - very unsavoury expression, Joey Deacon was made famous on Blue Peter & he was disabled, so the term Joey was an insult, like spacca, yup 70's were very un PC!!!

gaylord - insult, no idea if it was just a Trinity word but we used it alot!

FFS!!!Joey is already there, shan again!!!

Prez
22/12/2014 12:02:21 pm

You gaylord:)

I thought about Shan but initially left it out as it is a Scottish/North East word too.

Checking it further however it means unfair but I used it, as you did, to indicate embarrassment so that meaning was specific to Carlisle and it will be included. Cheers.

I need to say a big sorry to all of you who have used mobiles to access the Chum site over the past few months.

I rarely use one to look at it but I needed to yesterday and realised how badly formatted the home page is.

I have been lazy and assumed every time I changed the design that it would auto-format for mobile phone screens - how wrong I was.

I have re-designed it now taking this into account and you should be able to navigate to pages much better now. If there are any glitches i've missed please let me know.

Festive Chum, Chum, Chum...

Thanks Andy. I have included Jowsie and spawnie. Brilliant ones.

Ratch & Mott I have left out as it is more widespread than our dictionaries remit.

I have never heard of Biff (other than to hit) or Gleggs - anyone else used them?

Back in my day a "Nevvie" was any kid that used to eat stuff dropped on the ground (roughly 75% of kids in Langtoon).
Anyone mentioned "Clem" as either testicle or as a unit of weight?

Reply
Prez
1/1/2015 01:31:09 pm

We used clemmies too but it is a recognised dialect word (it means rocks) so you can see why it got used for what we used it for.

Nevvie I can't remember, but it seems to be scottish slang for a nephew but I will include it as i think it brilliantly fits the sort of person you described.

On "The State Management Pub Walk (August 10th 2014)" page, I've listed the establishments that were owned when the Scheme came to an end.

I counted 25 that are still open for business around the Carlisle area.

1) The Albion
2) Apple Tree
3) Bee Hive
4) Black Lion
5) Board Inn
6) Cally
7) Crown, Botch
8) Crown, Stanwix
9) Crown & Thistle
10) Cumberland
11) Currock Inn
12) Friars
13) Golden Lion
14) Harraby Inn
15) Howard
16) Joiners
17) Sailor
18) Napper
19) Lint
20) Milly
21) Museum
22) Near Boot
23) St. Nic
24) Sporty
25) Turf

Not even sure if one or two of these are still open!

Any advances/deletions on 25?

Hi,

I’m working on a BBC social history series about pubs. Looking at an episode in Carlisle and we usually feature some local people who tell us all about a certain pub in the area they love and why. I thought this sounds like something your group might be up for. Please drop me a line to talk it through if any of you are interested,

The reply from the TV people....

Hi Nick,

Sorry I took so long getting back to you this time,

I am working on a series called The Pubs That Built Britain and wondered if you were able to help at all. It is a new BBC series exploring Britain’s pubs and the social history these pubs belong to. There are 15 episodes and each happens in a different geographical location with a different theme. We filmed an episode in Carlisle recently focusing on the State Management Scheme and now we are trying to film our final segment. Essentially this part is where a regular customer or customers champions a pub they love to visit and its history. Essentially what we are after is to do an interview in the pub where we find out how much you love the pub, why you like going there and tells us its history or its interesting story. I would love to hear a bit more about your group etc. You think we could have a chat soon? We are hoping to film this next Wednesday or Thursday so not much time to set up. [Tel No]

I’m copying in my colleague Sharon as I am on holiday next week so please just reply all if you don’t get this today (Friday)

Thanks

Michelle

And following feedback from a number of Chums here is my reply to her....

Hi Michelle/Sharon.

I have passed the contents of your email on to our group and unfortunately have to tell you everyone has had a case of stage fright. This is in all truthfulness mostly due to the nature of what it was you were asking us to do. For a long time we have traditionally drank in one particular pub in Carlisle but due to one thing and another our allegiance has recently shifted. We feel it would be disingenuous either to speak about a pub we no longer consider 'home' - or even worse pretend a loyalty to a place we have only recently begun to frequent.

I'm sorry that we can't help you in the way you asked but I know from experience that there will be many people in the pubs on the Wednesday and Thursday who you could persuade to talk.

My recommendation for the most interesting pub in Carlisle at the moment is the Moo Bar (https://www.facebook.com/Moobarcarlisle)

I look froward with interest to watching your series.

Nick.

By the way Chums Some of you may have noticed we have lost a lot of functionality and content to the site recently. We have no search engine, no videos and no audio. That's coz we are no longer Weebly Pro.

It is costing me @ £100/year for the all singing all dancing version. If you want it all we may need to get a wee whip round/subscription going to off set the costs - my baby needs feeding more than you need this site:)

Excellent Zeitgeist Moment.

I was reading about him yesterday, he joined the RAF (hoorah) and served with the SAS. He never liked to talk about his time with the regiment though.

Famously, during an interview, the interviewer quizzed him about this topic. Christopher Lee said, "Can you keep a secret ? "

The interviewer leaned forward and replied, "Yes".

Christopher Lee leaned close to the interviewer and whispered, "So can I".

Legend. R.I.P.

There will be plenty of food, music and good company. All you need to bring are yourselves and plenty good strong liquor.

Actually, the cops picture was a bit risky. Due to the hightened alert state over there, those two cops weren't too sure about my intentions when I approached them and asked them for a photo.

They debated the situation for a good few minutes before obliging me.

My American friend who was with me said I was very lucky to have my photo taken with them!

Saturday 23 April 2016............. St George's Day.

Last St George's Day, I embarked on a solo campaign around some pubs dressed as a Knight in an effort to rekindle some patriotism and recognise, what many consider should be, a Public Holiday.

Just so we know,

St George is thought to have been born into a noble Christian family in the late third century in Cappadocia, an area which is now in Turkey. He followed his father's profession of soldier and became part of the retinue of the Emperor Diocletian. The emperor ordered the systematic persecution of Christians and George refused to take part. In 303, he was himself tortured and executed in Palestine, becoming an early Christian martyr.

Surprised no one has quoted Shakespear's Richard II's speech...

'This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,

This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,

This other Eden, demi-paradise,

This fortress built by Nature for herself

Against infection and the hand of war,

This happy breed of men, this little world,

This precious stone set in the silver sea,

Which serves it in the office of a wall

Or as a moat defensive to a house,

Against the envy of less happier lands,

This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England'.

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our English dead.
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage;
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;
Let pry through the portage of the head
Like the brass cannon; let the brow o'erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a galled rock
O'erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swill'd with the wild and wasteful ocean.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit
To his full height. On, on, you noblest English.
Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof!
Fathers that, like so many Alexanders,
Have in these parts from morn till even fought
And sheathed their swords for lack of argument:
Dishonour not your mothers; now attest
That those whom you call'd fathers did beget you.
Be copy now to men of grosser blood,
And teach them how to war. And you, good yeoman,
Whose limbs were made in England, show us here
The mettle of your pasture; let us swear
That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not;
For there is none of you so mean and base,
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!

Modern Translation of “Once more unto the breach, dear friends“:

Once more into the breach dear friends. Once more, or block the wall up with our English dead. In peacetime there’s nothing that so becomes a man as mildness and humility. But when the noise of war resounds in our ears then be like tigers: stiffen the muscles, stir the blood, disguise your good side with a display of grim-faced rage.

Next, give your eyes a terrifying look – let them protrude from the portholes of the head like brass cannons. Let your brows stick out over them with all the fearfulness of a sea-tormented cliff that overhangs its crumbling base, eroded by the wild destructive ocean. Now grit your teeth and flare your nostrils; take a deep breath and strain every sinew to its limit.

On, on, you most noble English, sprung from fathers proved in war; fathers who, like so many Alexanders, have fought from dawn till dusk in these parts and sheathed their swords only when there was no-one left to oppose.

Don’t dishonour your mothers: prove now that those you call your fathers did indeed beget you. Be examples, now, to men of less courage, and show them how to fight a war. And you, good yeomen, whose limbs were made in England, show us here what rural men are made of; let us see that you are worthy of your pedigree, which I have no doubt about, for there is not one of you so low born and humble that you don’t have a noble lustre in your eyes. I see you standing like greyhounds in the slips, straining for the start.

The game’s on, follow your instinct and, as you charge, shout “God for Harry, England, and Saint George!”.

Indeed.
Okay, The Zeitgeist Moment is 5 days late but I've got a bit more time on my hands now.

Great photo's.

Try to catch Michael Parkinson's interviews with Ali that are currently being reshown on TV.

Parkinson put up with a lot of banter from Ali, but, sadly, over the years as Parkinson interviews him, you can see Ali slowly fading away from a mighty force to a mere shadow of his former self.
R.I.P. Ali.

One day........

I have long been aware of a place in Cheshire called Chomondeley (pronounced CHUMLY).

Lo and behold, I have tracked down a pub called The Chomondeley Arms. What a fantastic sound to the ears....."Let's go to The Chumley Arms this weekend"

One day....one day....call it a sad man's Bucket List....I would love to go there. Anybody else think this is a worthy venture?

This link will give you an idea of the setup:

Unless Ewan went to rescue her, I think Wilson's potential new lady friend - that was spotted out the Golden Pheasant - has had a better offer. Wasn't there when I went past earlier.

While on a driving course at Stockport this week, we drove into Cholmondeley and past the Cholmondeley Arms. Our Instructor wouldn't let us stop for a cheeky pint though...

By 1973, when the Tory government felt embarrassed by this triumph of state control and the pubs were sold back to brewers in batches, the State Management Scheme could boast that it had made a profit in every single year of its existence.
