The 2005 Flood
On the weekend of the 6th January 2005 Carlisle became the main news item on every TV and radio channel. Flooding affected the Warwick Road area and Denton Holme leaving hundreds trapped or homeless and thousands without heating light and the telephone. For many of us the only connection to the outside world was BBC Radio Cumbria. These pictures were taken on the early Saturday morning when the flood water reached its highest level.
The white car in the pictures above is a good indicator of the changing depth of the water, although it got higher than that. The picture below is the living room of our (ground floor) flat on Warwick Road. The tide mark on the wall shows the water level's highest point on the inside.
