Dark Star

Greetings pop pickers.
In 1974 Dark Star told the story of a space crew on a mission to destroy unstable planets using talking smart bombs, one of which proves to be too smart and declares itself God before blowing up the ship. On the way they suffer a few minor mishaps like the death of their captain when his seat explodes. An explosion in a storage bay  destroys the ship's entire supply of toilet paper and an alien beachball creature adopted by one of the crew just wont stay put in the food locker. If you haven't seen it this film is just mad. Hard to believe Dan O'Bannon who co wrote with John Carpenter and also starred as Pinback went on to use some of  his ideas in Alien 6 years later. The song Benson, Arizona was written by Carpenter and Bill Taylor and was sung by a college friend of theirs called John Yager who was not a professional singer.

Silent Running

Time to get all hippy dippy.
Silent Running is a fantastic pre Star Wars science fiction film from 1972 with great effects and model work (for its time). Bruce Dern is passionate, caring and obsessed with looking after the last remaining botanical specimens of Earth under huge geodesic domes on his spaceship Valley Forge.
The only thing that really dates it is Joan Baez' bitter sweet hippy protest songs. Its not that they're bad songs and the lyrics are probably even more relevent 40 years later but I always get the urge to fast forward when they come on.

Compare and contrast

Well it has been a long long time but it was worth the wait. Sorry about the quality of these but they were the best I could find. Share and enjoy. 
Ahhh the travesty that is Jeff Wayne's War of the worlds new generation with Mr Boring Barlow.

 Gangnam style is apparently taking the internet by storm but this video shows its also gone where no man has gone before.
Ok so tell us Bill. Just why does Captain Kirk climb that mountain?
Now cleanse the eardrums with Justin Hayward and some pretty Autumnal scenery.
