Faces From The Past
The 90's
Some pictures donated by Sheep. These were taken when I used to mix with the great and the good. See if you recognise any celebs.
Some pic's from the late 90's of Mr and Mrs Prez, his sister and Dave. I shamelessly 'stole' them from Dee's Facebook site. Some are fancy dress, some are real...you decide which is which:)
I found some old pictures from when the King's Head used to have a more...relaxed... attitude to what was acceptable in a boozer (C. 1996?).
They were rescued from the flood (hence the crazy patterning around some of them) as are the ones below..

Notice there is one of me on stilts; a secret skill of mine. The lad with me was only 18 but almost 7 foot tall so it looks like I'm not that far off the ground - I was. Also in another I was sooo drunk that night It seems I managed to make even Phil Exile look uncomfortable - result:) The last pic I'm playing chess with a guy who had a cocktail of Dog, Coke and Speed. He beat me three games to nil., it is also an early example of a Chinny Reckon...
Some excellent pictures from Dennis. I'm told these were from NHS comedy reviews that Dennis and Ian used to do each year. It's obvious that they both took it 'seriously' and put a load of effort into it.
Update: Ian tells me these were taken at the Ukranian Club and the rap ones were an homage to the Beastie Boys called 'Fight for your right to surgery'

These were from a leaving do the theme was 'Teachers and Schoolgirls'. Dennis looks too furtive to be true in the picture on the right.
A reasonably clean cut Abbott 'Ale 'ouse', 'The Jezuit' and the 'Steaming Bishop of New Quay' with some lager types before the great schism. One of them, Collie, is second from the right.
All Ale The Big Beers!
In many ways the High Church of Big Beers was a forerunner to the 'Chums.' Formed circa 1992 within a year it went from a small cadre of three or four to a 'National' organization.
All members upon being initiated into the church were given names inspired by the good ale, and often the personality traits they exhibited when they were worshiping.
It began 'missionary work' soon afterwards sending one of its most zealous holy-men ‘The Jezuit’ to London, cunningly disguised as a mature student. He was given his own ‘See’ and became the High Scoop (South). It is doubtful he made any long-term converts but the heathens he found himself amongst clearly needed religious guidance.
Abbott Ale ‘ouse remained as spiritual head and father confessor to the faithful and adopted the title High Scoop (North).
The Church underwent a serious schism when a sizable number of its converts (mainly women and soft southern types) left the church and formed the High Church of Larger Lagers –bloody splitters.
Above is a picture of a particularly successful pilgrimage to Silloth then Hesket Newmarket in a Transit van (I think?). The quality of the picture isn’t very good, but then of course we were all very, very religious that day...
UPDATE
Since writing the above I have been informed by his Holyness The High Scoop (Southern) Jezuit that we were at Silloth Carnival when the pic was taken but somehow ended up, after a days heavy drinking, at Hesket Newmarket.

Three more snapshots of the early 90's. A big thanks to Mark's sister, Julie, for sending these to the site. Some have no Chums in them but I have uploaded them to illustrate the mixture of Youff groups that used to sit cheek by jowl (usually amicably enough) in the King's Head. Note Baby-faced Richard the Mod the corner in the first one behind Mark, Then in the second one a 'Loadsa-money' and his wife in coordinated shell suits sit next to a very handsome hippy and his crowd...admittedly, however, neither me or him look too happy about sitting together. The smiling woman in the foreground is Hairy Paul's girlfriend (and later wife) of the time, Jane.
The third picture was taken at one of Hairy Paul's legendary (Xmas?) parties. John Smiths and Home-brew Beer, a heady combination, eh? I notice Boney-Tony has got his hands on my Girlfriend's Monkey boots. Somethings never change.

Two camping Chums - Neil and Hairy Paul
The 80's
Here's a couple of one of our many Pauls. These shots of of 'Body Beautiful' were taken in 1989 on his first holiday abroad in Magaluf. The accommodation was not exactly 4 star judging by the sink in the background.
Prez Circa 1987 - note the blue leather jacket, classy eh?
Captain Bob plays Kreeps
Not strictly a vintage picture of a Chum, but the album cover and notes about 'Kreeps' will bring a few memories back for a lot of folk. I found this CD accidentally while trawling for old Hawkwind stuff on torrent sites. I was actually at this gig and it was as the notes say not very well attended, but quite a good night indeed...I even got 'Captain' Calvert's autograph.
The food poisoning bit is so...so....Les:)

A picture of Nicky and Helen from 1984. Ah leather headbands - that takes me back:)
Another Silloth Picture; the 1986 carnival I think. (L-R) Stitch, Jane and Derek
This was taken circa 1981 at Mick's Two. I think it was VI form fancy dress party. In it can be seen two Chums: Ewan, the one in the toga, and Jez resplendent in his Air Force great coat and flying helmet. Stitch is there too looking like he's immersed in the music or having a satisfying fart...
Notice Ewan’s dark red coloured tongue...Pernod and Black was very popular in those days.

Those with a keen eye and memories will recognize this was taken in the very excellent Mick’s One and again was at a VI form party. I think that was the night I first head-banged.
This is Donny-babe, or Don Kiddick as he likes the women to call him, looking a bit like Phil Lynott

A crackin' picture of Maka
NNN Nichola. i can remember when she used to wear those glasses (actually I remember the 'buggles' ones)
Oi Sabu! Jaffa during his Italian period and Fiona
Cheryl aged 8 years old - a blonde!
Whatever happened to Baby-Jay?
One of the best things about having a Nephew is the opportunity to put up old pictures, that he didn't know I had, for all the world to see.

The 70's and beyond
More video nostalgia - Film clips of Carlisle city centre in the late 60's/early 70's.
Two pics of Silver Cloud playing at Kreeps.
One and two half pictures of Toddy.
The middle one was taken in the board and includes 'Dipstick' back in the 'good ol' days' - notice the draft-packs of scotch bitter sitting on the bar.
Update
There is a bit of dispute over the comment above. I have looked at Toddy's site and in it he says the third picture was taken in the Bee hive, not the Board. I still think it's the Board (I never went in the Beehive until the late 80's so I can't say for sure) what does anyone else think? Click here to leave a comment on the Chumments page.
I have shamelessly nicked these pics from Toddy's brilliant Captain Cosmic site. I hope he doesn't mind, after all those "Pagoda" jibes I suffered Mr Todd it's the least you can do.
New Update
I have just seen he has 'shamelessly nicked' pictures of Silver Clouds re-union do at the Brickyard from our site, so all's fair and square:)
There are loads more pics that will take you soooo far down memory lane.
Go look at his site here

I have been meaning to post this pic for ages, but keep forgetting who everyone is on here.
I can see 'Honda' Bob (b.l.), Jinx (B.R.) and Ian Glendinning (Top). If anyone recognizes any others e-mail me and I'll add their names.

Thanks to Sandra for this pic. It and the one above were apparently taken in 1979 and it was Avie’s 21st birthday at Penrith Rugby Club.

On the back row is dunno Glendinning twins either side of Alan Graham the highest is Tommy Kane with Andy Willson in front then half in the pic is Colin Aston.

Here's a couple of Mrs prez aged 2 1/2. Cute, eh?...these were taken in 1978.
Another One of Kimmers at some sort of a basket weaving fest I think.
Here's a few excellent of 'Southern' Ian some when he was in his 20's I think. nice to see he was never too far away beer even then:) Very big thanks to carole for passing these on.
Well Nicky Got it right - the tartan-trousered girly in the recently uploaded B/W pic was, of course, Sandra. Here's another (later) one of her too. I didn't upload this one as it was soooo obvious it was her.
I don't think she's changed that much - only her jumper:)

These are two of the earliest pictures of any Chums so far offered up to the Chum site. Taken in 1978 they show a very young Prez with his very first sweetheart Pamela, his dog Cass, his bezza mate Ewan, and Barbara (with whom Ewan steadfastly resisted all attempts at matchmaking)....Just look at the body language where Ewan is cuddling Cass rather than Barbara.
Notice too, me and Pamela have matching sticky oot left lugs and both have hair the colour of Nicky's...Note also the fine heed o' hair that Ewan has.

MYSTERY CHUM 4: Another ‘Whose Dat?’ picture. This one was taken in 1978 too. I think the eyes gives this one away.
Another of Neil

Another oldie but goldie here.

Nicky, a few months before she met Maka:)
OK then a very long time before she met Maka.

Two pictures of NNN Nichola from when she was a wee sprog...pre-sue pollard days.
Three pictures of Denis at an early age giving Nicky a run for her money in the cuteness stakes. The words butter, melt and mouth come to mind.
On the last picture is that a Mr Whippy badge? I'm almost certain it is - I had one too!
I have been informed that I was right and it IS a Mr Whippy badge.
Nope. I have just come across the badge I had and it is a Mr Softee badge

The Prez and His Sister, Fi. - Late 60's
Neil has sent some absolute corkers of Carlisle. The top lot are from the 70's through to the 90's. The middle group are from the 60's the first shows the winter of 1963 the other two are from 1966. The five below those are all from 1958. I can't find out what was being celebrated in the middle three but the commonwealth games was held in the UK in that year -any other suggestions?
The 1800's
Chum killed by German Cook en route to Australia
'In March 1873, en route to Sydney, Australia, Captain Longmuir, a native of Stonehaven was beaten to death while he slept by the steward, a German named Wilhelm Kraus, aka William Cross. The first mate, George Morgan, another Stonehaven man, was lured into the Captain’s cabin by the killer and attacked, but managed to overpower the steward and grappled him to the ground as he produced a pistol and tried to shoot him. The killer was kept tied up in the wheelhouse as Morgan proceeded to master the ship successfully to Sydney. The captain’s body was kept in a barrel of spirits and buried at Sydney. Kraus was tried and convicted and hung the same year. It seems he had also tried to poison the entire crew and there was speculation that he had intended to take over the ship. He pleaded insanity at the trial and claimed not to remember the incident; however, he was found guilty and hanged.
George Morgan, who had so successfully taken control of the ship, went on to marry Ann Duthie, the sister of ship’s owner, William Duthie. Captain Longmuir had been due to take charge of the new Duthie ship, also named Ann Duthie, on his return to Britain, however, this then went to George Morgan'.
