Hi Helen. glad you had a grand away-day too & it was a pleasure to meet you & Colin. I have a good photo of you to go on the site soon so you can be the first of the County Durham chapter, Ha Ha! Keep on rockin' & hopefully catch up with you sometime soon. T'was good crack. Ian x

Hi Both.

It was nice to meet you both and sit a while with another fan of Mott/Hunter....the rest of the Chums can be philistines when it comes to appreciating good music:)

I remember you saying that you get over to Carlisle a bit. When you are over next put a comment on the site and we can all meet up for a proper night out.

Nick.

Helen Davies
12/8/2012 08:22:21 am

Thanks both. Mostly we probably travel over for gigs if the tour doesn't include Newcastle or we do both if we're feeling that way inclined. Colin is looking forward to Lizzy on Friday @ The Brickyard, but I can't get the time off work so can't make it - they're fab with Ricky Warwick singing - what a frontman - far superior to Sykes. :)

Gizmo
13/8/2012 06:13:07 am

Hi Helen
Lizzy are actually at the Sands centre - not the best of venuues but shouldn't matter if the music is good
I'll be there - A few drinks in The Napper first
Do you go to any of the gigs in the Cluny?

Gizmo
13/8/2012 06:14:18 am

Started adding photos to my page
Check them out

Helen Davies
13/8/2012 02:01:21 pm

Bugger - yes - sorry The Sands - we had trouble finding the place last week and now I can't remember the name of it - lol. Yes we go to The Cluny. We're going to see Heather Findlay Band there in November, it's a Tuesday mind you so prob best for locals.

Gizmo
14/8/2012 03:38:53 am

Heather Findlay band sounds good - I'll have to check if i'm free for that

Neil
13/8/2012 04:23:27 pm

Hi Gizmo. Like the photos especially the Fernhessen tower. Very spacey. Were you able to go up inside it?

Gizmo
14/8/2012 03:42:36 am

Yes you can but having 2 guys with fear of heights meant it will have to wait for next trip.
When i mean fear i mean FEAR !!! One turned a very sickly green/white colour just at the mention of it

Prez I'd recognise that sofa anywhere. It was about 7 ft long and I've spent many a drunken night on it. Also remember that wallpaper and the bonny lass on the sofa was and still is Judith Chalmer's cousin Catherine.

Prez
16/8/2012 10:49:57 pm

So does that mean it was at Paul's house?

Neil
17/8/2012 03:49:50 am

Well it was at the time when he still lived at home. His mum and dad's house.

Neil
15/8/2012 07:07:31 pm

Also just spotted Paul's mate Theo sitting just beyond you. Who knows, I may have even been in the room.

Thanks to all of the Chums for making Edinburgh a fun chum day out (wish it had been longer it is a beautiful city) lets call it a recce.

Prez
16/8/2012 10:48:39 pm

It's very late. I have put Donald to bed after a lot of whisky and smokes and am feeling very smug.

Good and unexpected night, cheers chums:)

ITT
17/8/2012 06:04:39 am

Ok, Prez, the game is up. You not only look like Charles Manson in but due to the photographic evidence, you spent the mid-late eighties (judging by Theo's jumper) recruiting your very own Manson-style Family. This got me thinking that Carlisle is not exactly the Hollywood Hills when it comes to famous people so imagine my utter despair when i realised the catastrophic effect the deaths of Gilly Frazer &/or Eric Wallace would have had on Border Crack & Deekabout!

To the Chums going to see Thin Lizzy tonight, have a great gig.

Keep On Chumming!!!

Prez

How could i have overlooked the kipper-tied local legend of national fame?

Prez

I have just googled Derek Batey and he is still with us!!

Actually he isn't with us as he moved to Florida, but he's 84years old

I have just seen Neils notification about the death of Harry Harrison. Another fantastic writer gone.

I was a big HH fan as a kid and onlward and think there were only four or so books on the slide show that I hadn't read (Slippery Jim was a big hero of mine and I always imagined him as James Coburn).

Shaggy
18/8/2012 09:38:23 am

Can I just say what a top night Lizzy layed on last night. Not a band counting their days to retirement but a vibrant new line-up. Well done to Scott, Ricky & the boys. Also a huge thanx to Colin & Helen for convincing me that it was more than a tribute act, would hate to have missed that gig, cheers Durham Chums! Hopefull see ya both again soon :)

ITT

My guess is Total Recall for The Goldsmith Challenge. It has to be a sci-fi film to be in Neil's Nerdvana & i think he's cleverly put it in because of the soon-to-be-released remake.

Neil
24/8/2012 06:19:07 pm

Good guess ITT an absolutely correct :)
Ok next question...........

One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind

And so a legend departs the the land of the living

R.I.P Neil Amstrong

Here, here! Sad news. I'm wearing my Armstrong roots proudly today.

Neil
25/8/2012 07:03:22 pm

A great man. A brave man. A quiet man. The sort of guy that didn't do it for fame and fortune but to advance his and our understanding of our place in the universe. Rest in peace.

Prez
25/8/2012 08:52:52 pm

Very sad news. He was a hero to those of our generation who liked our heroes unassuming. We are old enough to remember the change it made to the way the world thought and he formed our attitudes, our daydreams and, of course, our hobbies and interests.

I want to nominate him as our first posthumous honorary Chum

George McDonald Fraser in a book he wrote made a very interesting observation. In 1969 Neil Armstrong, President Nixon and Billy Grahame were sat together attending a Political event.

Arguably the three most influential men in America, was each of Reiver descendent.

Makes you proud to be a Borderer.

Ewan
26/8/2012 03:53:36 am

I'll second the nomination for Neil Armstrong

Nice to see Weebly have initiated 'Fancy Boxes' for photo albums. You can navigate through batches of pics by using the thumbnails at the bottom. A nice touch is that you can use your left and right arrow keys to move rapidly through the album.

Go give it a try...

Hiya Chums - we are almost certainly coming over to Carlisle for the Rock and Blues Fest on Nov 10 @ The Swallow Hotel, mainly to see Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash who if you haven't seen them lately are still on fire. We have seen them three times so far this year and each time have had a chat with them (not name dropping at all - just chuffed about it). It's £45 each for the Sat line-up which includes Mick Ralphs (who we saw recently at Cambridge Rock and Beer Fest) and lots of others. We have to wait until pay day (Friday) to buy the tickets, but this should be a great night. Maybe we'll see some of you there. :)

Gizmo
29/8/2012 06:40:00 am

I'll definitely be there - already have the full weekend ticket
Actually i prefer Andy Powell Wishbone Ash whom i saw at the Highlands Blues festival in Holland But What the hell Live music is always goooood

Helen Davies

We have seen Andy Powell's version too, but prefer Martin Turner's, but both very good, and as you say live music is always goooood. Real Ale will please Colin. I'm more of a rose wine girl myself. :)

Shaggy
29/8/2012 03:09:43 pm

Ok, after weeks of feeling uncomfortable looking at other mens packages, i've finally brought myself round to answer only four of the Maka's "Who's Crotch Is It Anyway?" Quiz.
B) Mr Maka himself (camo shorts)
C) Prez (the shirt looks vaguely familiar)
D) Johno (dayglo green & tweed combo is a giveaway!)
E) Dennis (is it a semi-on or a lazy lob (or just an old camel toe!) in beige canvas pants?)
The other two could be anyone (me included).

Keep On Chumming!!!

Prez
3/9/2012 03:50:07 am

You are a very brave man to admit to doing this.

Every other Chum has probably looked and pondered packages but no one had the guts to post this confession for the world to see:)

Hi Chums - we are now not coming over for the Carlisle Blues Fest as it's gonna be too ruddy expensive. The icing on the cake was the 8% fee on each ticket purchased via the Net - ffs. I'm sure it'll be a fab weekend and that those of you who go will have an amazing time. H

ITT
5/9/2012 06:36:25 am

I totally agree. Me & NNN (like many Chums) go to see a lot of gigs and the booking fees per ticket are a complete rip-off. You feel like your being taken advantage of for supporting live music. And don''t get me started about people buying tickets to sell on ebay! Rant over.
Try not to let it stop your passion for seeing live bands.

Keep On Chumming!!!

NNN
5/9/2012 09:09:57 am

seconded!

Helen Davies
5/9/2012 01:17:42 pm

It won't stop us going to local gigs, or gigs where we can buy the tickets from a local box office etc. We often go to gigs in York without paying such extortionate fees. We have several gigs coming up starting with Mostly Autumn at The Sage, Gateshead, just up the road from us. Colin is off to a gig at The Cluny tomorrow night too and then to York on Saturday - busy, busy, busy :)

Don't worry Prez you will get another chance. Don't think it was easy for Shaggy to admit he'd seen a Next Gen movie. The Goldsmith challenge is having a slight hiatus to give chums a chance to listen to some proggy stuff from the prog awards but it will definately return.

Keep On Chumming!!!

ITT

P.S. I know my guess is'nt technichally sci-fi but it pips the post against 'The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins' for catchiness!

Neil
12/10/2012 11:38:14 am

Thats ok cos this weeks Goldsmith challenge isn't technically sci-fi either.
Oh by the way ( Bah Bah ) wrong answer.

ITT
14/10/2012 03:52:05 am

Bugger! It must be The Omen then. I do hope i'm allowed two guesses!

Anyone who enjoys watching paint dry why not have a look at this instead. Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner is now sitting in a little space capsule at Rosswell New Mexico waiting for the breeze to drop in hopes of performing the highest freefall ( 23 miles ). It also happens to be the 65th anniversary of Chuck Yeager's sound barrier breakthrough.
Lets hope Felix has the....What's that stuff called again?

Hmmm the 'Goldsmith' this week is a real poser. It's unlike any that have been posed before and the haunting Kids chorus is annoyingly familiar.

Regarding Halloween, after last years successful eve I believe Nicky will be announcing the location for this one.

So watch this space....

Aye, it's a tough one this time. I'm gonna go for my 3rd attempt with Poltergeist. I'm running out of Goldsmiths so Neil must be!

ITT you've done it again. You obviously know your film scores. Trouble is I am rapidly running out of Goldsmith. Well the sci-fi/fantasy side anyway. I may have to do the Williams or the Elfman challenge next.

I love the Hitler clip from the brilliant 'Downfall'.

Who would have thought the Nazi dictator would feel so passionately about not being able to dance to Lou Gramm's 'Midnight Blue' with Eva Braun again? Luckily, Rock Nights at Annabells & Clouds came to the rescue and prevented an invasion of Botchergate!

Keep On Chumming!!!

Thanks Shaggy.

Got the lot shifted in one afternoon, Den and Ewan were excellent movers.

Special thanks to Ewan who doubly suffered (in silence) as he is allergic to Cats and he was shifting all the stuff the cats sleep/lounge upon.

Much thanks.

We owe you both a slap up meal at Mrs Miggins' Pie Shoppe with Big Beers.

Cheers Chums.

We always knew Den & Ewan were 'excellent movers' due to their Club Rock activities. Apparently, they're both quite efficient at shifting furniture too!

Keep On Chumming/Moving/Shifting Furniture & or Cat Bedding!!!
