Edinburgh Chum's Awa'!

Well Chums the next away-day is almost here. Time to begin to put down on the site what has already been decided and organized.

  • It's Edinburgh this time.
  • We are going on the 8th August (Wed)
  • For those who haven't been on one of our 'Jollies' before, its a chance to visit a significant number of 'crackin' boozers' as Maka would say, and along the way maybe get some accidental culture too.
  • There are about 14 people going, but more are welcome.
  • We are going by train.
  • We are meeting at 8:00am for slap up breakfast & beer at Woodrow's before we set off.
  • We will be leaving Woodrow's at 9.15 sharp for the station. Trans-pennine train straight through.
  • For those 14 below our tickets have been bought and were £25 we have seats reserved on the train in 2 groups.
  • Anyone who would still like to come is welcome and tickets will still be £25 its called an off peak day return and can be bought up to and including the day, with this you can take any train home.

Finally there are some really good websites highlighting the pubs and places in Edinburgh I have popped a couple below to get you in the mood.

Read up - forewarned is forearmed...

Beer in the Evening

Traditional Bars and Pubs in Edinburgh

250 Olde World alehouses in the Edinburgh region

Edinburgh Pub Guide

Ye Olde Edinburgh Route Planner

Arrive at Waverley Station 11.04 am

- Halfway House  (it's a teeny weeny real ale pub near the station)
- Check out Halfway House - click here
- Old Fleshmarket close, 199 High street EH1 1BX

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- The Bow Bar (A Traditional Real ale Pub using the original tall fonts, air pressure driven by a water engine to                                         serve your pints)
- Check out The Bow Bar - Click Here
- 80 Westbows EH1 2HH

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Brewdog (Started in 2007 by Martin, James and one dog 'Our biggest mission when we set up BrewDog                             was to make other people as passionate about great craft beer as we are. And that is still our                             biggest mission today')
- Check out Brewdog - click here

- Cowgate Road EH1 1JS

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Then across to the posh side of town EH2

- If folk haven't already eaten by now there is a huge Wetherspoons called The Standing Order

- The Standing Order - 62-66 George street EH2 2LR
- Check out The Standing Order - click here

- there is a Hard Rock Cafe on George Street also, its an experience but the food and drink tend to be pricey. Good to do if you have never been to one before.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- The Queens Arms (unusual and rather Harry Pottery with real ales)
- Check out The Queens Arms - Click Here
- 49 Frederick St  EH2 1EP
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- The Jekyll & Hyde (Shackles, Chains etc, bit like Filthy Shades Of Grey but with Beer)
- Check out The Jekyll & Hyde - click here
- 112 Hanover Street ED2 1DR
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- The Black Rose Tavern (its a rock bar with ales)
- Check out The Black Rose Tavern - click here
- 49 Rose Street EH2 2NH
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Due to the amount of beer we have consumed by this time its probably best to keep it simple by walking towards Princess Street which will be a nice straight line to follow back towards the station.

We have seats reserved on the 6.52 pm train a group of 6 and a group of 8 we will get back at 8.06 pm the train is straight through - Virgin train

If we decide to stay later the LAST! train is 7.56 pm we have to change at Carstairs (in 8.23-out 8.36) and we get home at 9.25  pm. - Trans-pennine then Virgin.

Then its straight to the Napper for debriefing.

Disclaimer - Please do not feel obliged to drink 500 kegs no one is under any pressure and tea, soft drinks and even water is acceptable. If anyone drinks 500 kegs it is at their own risk but we will try to scrape them up to put onto the train (it may not of course be the train to Carlisle)

Update 12th July 2012

Well Nicky has collected money from a number of Chums and a few more have said they are coming, including some first-timers. I have posted a list of those who have signed up below.  Contact me If I have missed someone off the list or have got the information wrong.

Chum, chum, chum...
